The whole point about being a villain is to find out why the character is different from everybody else. Look at him.' It's about character, first of all, and if there's no character to the person you're playing, you've got nothing. People don't walk into the room, and you think, 'Oh, my God, he's evil. I have played many villains over the years, and I've always been appalled when people say, 'Can you make him more evil in this?' I always say no. They're both thieves, but Belloq has merely collaborated with a really nasty set of people in order to get what he wants. Belloq and Indiana Jones were very close to each other, and they're both after the same thing. Is that how you have always seen him?įreeman: I'm not sure that's the view of Belloq that I would agree with. Thompson: Belloq has gone on to be something of a classic villain. It is as lively as it ever was the wit still works, the human element still works, and I think all of that together keeps it young, vibrant, and alive. It's not trapped in a period it's not in aspic. It's such a modern film despite it recreating a period. Paul Freeman: No, it doesn't, and I think that is because it stands up so well.
